Condition Questions and Answers

How Long Does Postpartum Shedding Last?

The Short Answer: Postpartum hair loss typically begins 3 months after delivery and peaks around month 4 or 5. For most women, the shedding resolves on its own by their baby's first birthday (6 to 12 months postpartum). It is not permanent hair loss, but rather a "catch-up" shed caused by dropping hormone levels.

The Pregnancy Hair Cycle

During pregnancy, high estrogen levels keep hair "locked" in the growth phase, preventing normal daily shedding (which is why pregnant women often have thick, lustrous hair). After birth, estrogen drops, and all that retained hair falls out at once.

Stage What to Expect
Pregnancy Minimum shedding. Thicker volume.
Month 1-3 (Post) Hormones drop. Follicles enter rest phase.
Month 3-6 (Post) Peak Shedding. Clumps in shower drain.
Month 12 (Post) Density returns to pre-pregnancy levels.

Nursing Safe? Many new moms ask if they can take Viviscal PRO while breastfeeding. While drug-free, we always recommend consulting your doctor before starting any supplement while nursing. Once cleared, it is excellent for replenishing the nutrients depleted during pregnancy.

Common Questions About Postpartum Hair

Does breastfeeding cause hair loss?

No, breastfeeding itself does not cause hair loss. The shedding is caused by the hormonal shift that happens after birth, regardless of whether you nurse or bottle-feed.

Can I stop the shedding?

You cannot stop the hormonal shed (the hair is already detached), but you can hide the thinning. Many new moms use Toppik Hair Fibers to conceal the widening part line or "temple recession" that often occurs during this phase.
