We love warm weather, sunshine and swimming pools – but not what they do to our hair! In the summer, the combination of hot and humid weather plus wear and tear from our favorite summer activities can lead to dryness, frizz, breakage, and even changes in hair color. That’s not the look you want for your summer vacation! There’s no need to stay indoors however, follow these summer hair care tips for beautiful hair all season long!
Take Advantage of the Heat
Next time you’re at the beach or the pool, apply a deep conditioning mask to the ends of your hair, then wrap in a bun. The heat of the sun will help the product to penetrate the hair shaft, leaving you with silky smooth and ultra-moisturized strands. Plus, the conditioning mask will prevent hair from being damaged by chlorine or saltwater.
Rinse with Fresh Water
This summer hair care tip is so simple, but it makes a huge difference! Before going into the ocean or pool, rinse your hair with fresh, clean water. Your hair can only absorb so much liquid, so it will absorb the clean water rather than the unpurified ocean or chemical-laden pool water. This will help to prevent your hair from getting too dry or changing shades.
Prevent Green Hair
Anyone with light-colored hair fears contracting a green tint from swimming pools. “Pool hair” is actually from algaecide, which prevents algae from growing in pools. You should always ash your hair after swimming in a pool to prevent a green hair tint Before swimming, wet hair with clean water or spray with leave-in conditioner to prevent pool chemicals from getting into your hair in the first place.
Skip the Highlights
You may want to lighten your hair for the summer months, but remember that spending time out in the sun will naturally lighten your hair. Highlighting and lightening hair can cause breakage, damage and dryness because the outermost layer of the hair shaft is lifted in order to make the change in color.
Natural Hair Care Tip: Don’t want to lighten your hair? Make sure to wear a sunscreen specially formulated for hair, or just a good old fashioned hat!
Fight the frizz
Sun, chlorine and saltwater can all dry out hair and lead to breakage, which is the root of frizz. Fight hair dryness by switching to a more moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. In a pinch, you can use a silicone-based smoothing serum to temporarily smooth hair cuticles. However, we don’t recommend that you use smoothing serums often, as they can dry out your hair when used too often.
More Frequent Shampooing
Just as your face becomes more oily in the summer, so too does your scalp. If you find that your usual hair washing routine isn’t cutting it, you may need to increase the frequency of your shampoo sessions. Just be sure to use a gentle shampoo, like Viviscal Densifying Shampoo, that won’t strip your hair.
