Maybe you’re shunning conventional hair care products to avoid potentially toxic ingredients, or maybe you’ve tried already tried minoxidil and finasteride with underwhelming results. Essential oils may be the key to growing thicker, healthier hair. Which essential oils are best for hair growth, and how are they applied? Let’s find out…
How Essential Oils Can Promote Hair Growth
Essential oils are concentrated versions of the natural oils in plants– and have been used in homeopathic medical treatments for thousands of years.
Several essential oils are effective in promoting hair health and growth. These essential oils help hair to grow by stimulating blood for to the scalp, improving circulation. Improved circulation means that vital nutrients are delivered to the hair follicles, helping them to produce more hair. As an added benefit, many of these essential oils have healing, cleansing, and moisturizing properties.
The Best Essential Oils for Hair Growth
Lavender Oil
According to a Korean study published in Toxicological Research, lavender oil can promote hair growth. In the study, topical application of lavender oil on mice significantly increased their number of hair follicles.
This sweet-scented essential oil also has antimicrobial and antifungal properties, which can help combat scalp conditions like dandruff. Lavender’s soothing scent has the added benefit of reducing stress, a common factor in hair loss.
Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is known for its cool, energizing scent and its ability to boost circulation. In a 2014 animal study, peppermint oil was shown to promote hair growth and number of follicles. Peppermint’s powerful antiseptic properties are also effective in treating lice and dandruff.
Cedarwood Oil
This woody-scented oil stimulates blood flow to the scalp to promote hair growth. In a Scottish study, 44% of patients who applied a cedarwood oil mixture to their scalp saw an improvement in
their alopecia symptoms. Plus, cedarwood oil reduces scalp irritation and balances scalp oil production.
Thyme Oil
This strong smelling essential oil is common in hair care products for thinning hair. Why? Because thyme increases blood flow to the scalp and invigorates hair follicles. Make sure to only use thyme linalool oil, as red thyme oil may irritate the skin.
Ylang Ylang Oil
Ylang ylang oil was popular as a hair growth remedy in Victorian England. Ylang ylang oil increases scalp circulation and stimulates sebum production to moisturize dry, brittle hair. This floral-scented oil has the added benefit of reducing anxiety, which can contribute to hair loss.
Rosemary Oil
This invigorating oil stimulates cellular metabolism, promoting hair growth and healing of the scalp. According to a 2015 study published in Skinmed, rosemary oil is just as effective at growing hair as minoxidil, the active ingredient in many hair growth treatments.
Dandruff getting you down? Rosemary oil can minimize flakes and itchiness.
How to Use Essential Oils for Hair Growth
If you’re interested in trying essential oils for healthy hair, be sure to purchase 100% pure, organic oils. Lower grade essential oils will not work as well. Since essential oils are so potent, also dilute them with a carrier oil.
For a hair growth treatment, mix a few drops one or more of the essential oils with 2 oz. of a carrier oil like olive or jojoba oil. Massage oil mixture into the scalp. Cover head with a towel or shower cap and allow mixture to soak into hair for at least 30 minutes. Shampoo as usual, being careful to fully rinse out any remaining oils. Residual oils can weigh down fine hair, making it appear limp and lifeless.
Alternatively, add a few drops of a hair-boosting essential oil to your favorite shampoo and conditioner. Style as usual.
If you have sensitive skin, do a spot test to ensure to negative reactions between the essential oils and your skin.
