Brow Trends from the Past

1920’s-1940’s

With the prevalence of movies, for the first time women were seeing other women on their screens and taking inspiration to craft their own looks. Using beauty as a way to self-liberate, many women were modeling themselves after silent film queen Clara Bow. Throughout the next 20 years brow looks remained heavily tweezed until debutantes like Grace Kelly hit the scene with a more dramatic and bold look.

1950’s-1970’s
Beauty hit an all-time high in the 1950’s with Dior’s new ‘full face makeup’ trend being seen on the likes of actresses like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. Taking on a more curvaceous tone, brow styling became more immaculate and striking. These looks lasted up until the 60’s were we saw brows lean towards a more natural, untamed shape while women practiced their freedom of love and speech.

1970’-1990’s
More was more, and the fuller brow look as seen on Brooke Shields and Madonna lead the movement that bushier is better. Once the 1990’s hit however, women began taking their plucking very seriously. As actress Pamela Anderson made a great example of, less was actually more!

2000’s-2016
As we mentioned earlier, the brows from 2000’s to now have taken on a mind of their own. With more emphasis being put on appearance in the digital age, having your brows ‘on point’ is definitely a thing. It’s almost as if model Cara Delevingne took the brow game to whole new level, creating a desire for a more fuller, flirtier-framed face.

2017
Taking it a step further, this year’s brows are definitely still bold but with more of a focus on looking natural. With the rise in microblading and other techniques that give women the appearance of fuller brows without using harsh pencils, gels or powders. Many women are seeking a more natural look when it comes to their brows.

Finding the Best Brows for You

Eye size and shape play a role in the brow style that works best for you but face shape is one of the most important factors to determine the perfect arches and angles. Once you’ve grown out your brows to the best of your ability, you or your eyebrow specialist will want to begin defining your brows by waxing, threading or tweezing. Here are the 3 basic steps to creating the best brows:

Step 1: Consider the shape of your face

Certain Face Shapes look best with different brow characteristics, so consider this before you begin creating your very own brow transformation.

Below are the four most common face shapes and the best brow style for each:

round shape face

Round
When the face is round, you’ll want to go for a brow look that is very sharp and angular. Higher arches with defined pointed tips on the tail-end look best with this face shape. A good tip is to use trimming scissors when shaping brows on a round face to get the clean and precise finish, this will help bring shape to your face.

oval face shape

Oval
Oval faces are one of the easiest and most dynamic face shapes to have when it comes to brows. Almost any style will look great, high angular arches to sharp defined lines that stretch outwards to your temples. As long as the brow is well-balanced it will work well with this proportioned face shape.

heart shaped face shape

Heart shaped
One of the trickier shapes to work with, heart shaped faces look best with brows that are simple and more straight across. Heart shape faces already have a strong emphasis on the forehead and eye area so a nice compliment to this is something that is low set rather than extremely arched.

square face shape

Square
Very round brows work well with a square face shape. By already having strong defined lines. The square jaw already accents the angularity of this face shape so you will want to stay away from brows that are sharply arched. Rounded shapes that are darkened when filled in will be the statement look for this shape.

Step 2: Determine Your Desired Brow Shape

Once face shape is considered, the next step to transforming your brows is to create the outline of the shape you desire. To start, hold the straight edge of an eyebrow pencil or ruler vertically in front of your face as you mark points to create the outline of your brow shape. Using a brow pencil, mark the inner area of where you want your brow to start, the uppermost area for the arch and the outer area for the tail.

Step 3: Fuller Eyebrows, Instantly!

Once you’ve determined the best brows for your face and you’ve outlined the desired shape, the last step is the most important step…. Create boldness and fullness by filling them in!

The best and most natural way to create a bolder brow is by using Toppik’s 3-piece Brow Building Fibers Set. While there are many eyebrow gels and eyebrow powder products, Toppik is the first to offer completely natural hair fibers as a way to define, shape, and fill in brows.

Toppik Brow Building Fiber are available in 3-shades of color. If you’re going for a softer look, the fill-in color you use should be one shade lighter than your natural brow color. If you’re going for a bolder, more noticeable look, a darker brow color will make your face and eyebrows stand out more.
